The "Yakmobile" The almost pointless resurrection, restoration and running of a 1953 Norman Model 'C' Autocycle

Getting over the lack of the photo of the 'floor based' ignition system, here is a photo of what happened the next day;

Announcing the 'Mark 2' ignition system, featuring the innovative 'mounted on the bike not the floor' design.

Before settling on this design I did try and revive the original flywheel magneto, I eventually managed to produce a spark, but it was just too feeble to run the engine. Maybe the coils are shot, maybe the magnets are no longer magnet-ey enough, whatever the truth of the problem the get-it-running at no-costs attitude prevailed, resulting in the lash up you see here. Note that all wiring is carefully colour coded. Now find the misleading sentence on this page.

Ignition componentry fetishists will no doubt mail in complaining about lack of condenser graphics, but I must admit that I mounted it in a conveniently awkward place on the engine plates behind the magneto, where it is bound to attract road dirt and damp and fail prematurely, in my defence I can only say that there was a handy stud lurking there.

The coil is the same XJ6 coil that was previously on the floor. Being that it is of 'ballasted' spec I tried to run it in series with the ballast resistor you see lurking on the bracketry. Unfortunately the ballast resistor is mouldy past belief so you see it disconnected here. Maybe you won't see it again, then again I may retain it for those whimsical moments when I refer to it as a 'piece de resistance'. Without it I suspect the current draw will soon firty up the points again. What I need is a proper non-ballast 12v coil.

Yikes I've only just got over my last visit but it looks like I'll need plunder The Cellar (dum-dum-de-durr!) again.
